I’m leaving South Florida for a while. I’m taking a trip across the country. On my scooter. Since my scooter maxes out at 35mph (unless I’m going downhill), I can’t take the interstate, obviously. And so I will be taking the long way; the shorter back roads, the long empty stretches of highway, through the cities, through the towns, through the hamlets, and through the desert.
I’m planning to leave on some date between the 15th and 22nd of this month to arrive in LA on the 22nd of May. On that day, May 22nd, a four-day reunion begins in LA for kids that grew up in Saudi Arabia; kids known as Aramco Brats, children whose parents worked for the oil company.
My plan is to come back to South Beach, afterward, but I don’t know exactly where I’ll end up. All I know right now is that in under three weeks, I’m going nomadic.
(Also, there are photos up in Street +/ Life, photos that were supposed to be of a neatly stacked pile of red bricks. I didn’t find red bricks but I found an automotive repair shop that was closed for the day.)
Hope you got the link to the blog I sent you.
.
Rick, I forgot to respond to that. I actually thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed that link you sent. It actually helped somewhat in making my decision.
Excellent!
given scott’s penchant for procrastination… I presume this is a late April Fool’s prank?
If not… good luck, you will certainly need it..
This is no April Fools joke… He’s gonna do it.
Scott, how much does it cost to fill up your scooter?
How many miles can you drive on a tank of gas?
Doug, haha. Yeah no.
Gus, when we spoke the other night, I’m not sure what I was thinking. My scooter holds a gallon of gas, so it costs between $2 – $2.50 to fill it up. I haven’t measure the exact mileage but I get between 40-50 miles to the gallon. Right now, I spend about a dollar a week on gas on average. I anticipate the trip costing me between $150-$200 for gas/oil.
Also, I talked to a couple of different scooter places and there’s a restriction on my scooter limiting it to 35mph. They said that it can easily be lifted if I bring it in, which could add another 5mph.
“I haven’t measure the exact mileage”
I hope you map out your route, before you hit the road.
Make sure to bring a spare tank. There are a few places in Texas where there is no gas for over 100 miles.
You should also wear a helmet, with a face shield to keep the wind a bugs at bay.
The Google walking map says that it is 2,716 miles:

We’re rooting for you.
If you need anything, you know how to reach me.
Wow! I can’t believe you’re really doing this! It would be great if you could document it somehow. Please be safe, Scott … and have fun!
Good luck and I hope that’s a tough scooter, that drive will be hell on a scooter engine!
Also, watch The Straight Story before your trip.
It’s funny, I am planning almost the same trip, except in my beat up old Toyota and will probably be heading out early May.
I am so psycho excited to hit the road. If anything comes between this trip and I, I will be seriously disappointed. I’ve been planning this for years. Now’s our time to head west!
Have a great trip. I hope you keep us updated on your adventures.
Liz, that’s awesome. Someone else is heading to Miami right now from San Fran. Maybe you and I will cross paths on the way. And by cross paths I mean you whip by me as I’m chugging along.
