Make a difference

Alec + Zach at the SC State Fair, circa 2005

A couple of weeks ago, I went by Miami Beach Senior High where Alec went to school while he was here. It was the first time I had been there since my sons left in December of ’08. It wasn’t a particularly pleasant experience, going there. As soon as I crossed through the gate and saw the office, I got choked up. And even though it seemed like I could cruise through the meeting without incident, I completely lost my composure in front of the administrator who graciously took the time to speak with me. Such is life.

My reason for going was simple. I wanted to know if there were any local organizations (that the school supported) whose mission was to help troubled teens. I found out that there is: the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

On October 24th at 10am, I will be taking part in the Miami-Dade County Out of the Darkness Community Walk which raises money to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. From the Out of the Darkness website:

WALK TO SAVE LIVES…

In the United States, a person dies by suicide every 16 minutes, claiming more than 33,000 lives each year. It is estimated that an attempt is made every minute; with close to one million people attempting suicide annually. With your participation, you will not just be walking, and your donors will not just be writing a check – you will be helping to save lives.

By walking in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), you will be walking with thousands of people nationwide to raise money for AFSP’s vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, advocate for mental health issues, and assist survivors of suicide loss.

WALK TO HONOR A LOVED ONE…Many of our participants walk in memory of a loved one lost to suicide. AFSP provides opportunities for survivors of suicide loss to connect with each other and get involved through a wide variety of educational, outreach, awareness, advocacy and fundraising programs. Each walk site has its own unique remembrance activity in which you can participate to honor a loved one.

WALK TO RAISE AWARENESS… AFSP funds research aimed at improving our understanding of suicide and ways to prevent it as well as educational activities to increase awareness about prevention, warning signs and the psychiatric illnesses that can lead to suicide.

By deciding to walk you are taking us a step closer to making suicide prevention a national priority.

The walk takes place at the Coral Gables campus of the University of Miami. It would be great to have a team of people to walk together. No, it would be awesome.

I’ve set a fairly reasonable fundraising goal for myself of $500. Please consider giving to this worthwhile cause. If you’d like to donate to help me reach that goal, there is a DonorDrive page (secure and easy) where you can make donations directly. The donation page is located here: http://afsp.donordrive.com/participant/alec

Most of you are already aware of what is behind this, but for those who aren’t: my oldest son, Alec, committed suicide earlier this year. Here is some of my account of that. And here is a page on Facebook in loving memory of Alec. A cursory glance through the comments and through the friends list, and you can see the impact Alec’s life and death had on others. For a while, I left the group because it was just… too much sadness. Six months, Alec has been gone now. He left a giant hole in the hearts of many.

This is my motivation and while I can’t bring Alec back, I CAN make a difference in the lives of others and help to reduce suicide. Please consider making a donation to support this cause.

Thank you.

Gallery updates? Yeah, a few.

Leaving the beach, no. 574

Street +/Life Gallery:

I’ve added photos taken on September 6th, 7th, 8th, … well, most of September up through the 13th. This brings the total number of photos within the Street +/Life gallery to over 5,600.

Girls of Ipanemic Gallery:

Completed:
Anastasia, A Good morning
Ava Addams, Love Letters
Madison Scott, Stockings Only
Renna Ryann, Under a Bridge

Photos added:
Anastasia, De-robed
Angela (all sets)
Ava Addams, Au Naturel
Britney Brooks, Stripped
Delila Darling, Three Bears Revisited
Christie, L’Amour, Colombian Sensuality

And, of course, Ginger, “I need new Facebook Photos!” This is one of those endless sets. :) This brings the total number of photos within the Girls of Ipanemic gallery to over 2,500.

There’s a simple reason why I added more photos to the Girls of Ipanemic gallery than to the Street +/ Life gallery: 99.9% of the photos published were already processed with the exception of adding the appropriate tags and categories. Street +/ Life photos are new every day to me. A large portion of my day is spent going through and processing Street +/ Life photos, surprisingly.

In any event, I think that hitting the 10,000 photo mark on ipanemic.com by year end is going to be a given. There are hundreds if not thousands of photos in BOTH galleries which I’ve already processed but I simply haven’t published.

Notable: Miami New Times

Pets, no. 826

Everyone knows Miami New Times Magazine. Little green newsstands all over the South Florida have stacks of their weekly available for free to the public. And the print edition is a great mag. Always great articles, always great photography, always great art, and always curious and entertaining advertisements.

The online version of Miami New Times is equally enjoyable. And I thought that I had a link to them in my notable links section, however, I must have overlooked putting a link there when I migrated ipanemic.com to the new format. I noticed this when, recently, I’ve had a few of my photos featured as their 305 Photo of the Day and coming back to ipanemic, I realized no link was to be found to them. Weird. So I’ve changed that; I enjoy their site and recommend visiting.

I’ve actually put up two links in the Notable Links section to them. One to the Miami New Times site, and one to Riptide 2.0, one of the blogs featured on their site. (Be sure to check out their food, culture, and music blogs as well.) If you like the print mag, check out the online edition. Well worth it.

Sexy time at Sex And The Beach

Girl with guitar, no. 577

So my friend Maria over at Sex And The Beach is celebrating 5 years of her sexuality being plastered all over the internet by way of her blog. :) As a gift to her readers, Maria is holding a contest with the grand prize being a free photoshoot with some local photographer who apparently takes “steamy photos of hot chicks in a boudoir setting or the beach.”

Oh wait. That’s me! I’m the photographer! Yay!

Yes, I’m partnering with Maria and offering a free photoshoot to the winner. However, not only does the winner get a free photoshoot but they also get a hair and makeup session with D & L Hair Studio. Very, very cool.

So yeah. Head over to Sex And The Beach, check out the info and rules, and register for the contest. And stay tuned to Sex And The Beach for more details…

Notable: Lush

Being the butterfly with mild Social Anxiety Disorder that I am, I don’t get out that much. (“Come on, Scott! Go with us!” “Yeah, I might show up later.” “Sure you will.”) But from time to time, I do make it beyond the streets of South Beach and into some venue. Lately, one of the places that I’ve been finding myself chilling out at is Lush at 233 12th Street (between Washington and Collins Ave).

Incredibly laid-back, Lush provides a pleasant escape from the superficiality that sometimes pervades the beach. Truly, a bar’s bar: a nice selection of beer (priced inexpensively), dark lighting, a pool table to the side, comfortable seating, a jukebox that isn’t filled with ooomp-chi-oooomp-chi-oooomp-chi pounding out at 160 beats per minute, and even a beer pong table. (I don’t play beer pong. But I can appreciate the sport.)

Lush is a great time with friends. And a nice place to make new ones. Locals, tourists… I’ve seen the crowd mixed. But there’s no pretention. AND it’s dog-friendly. Last time I was there, a friend of mine brought his tennis ball-obsessed dog who had as much fun with the other bar patrons as they did with him. And, of course, the staff had a bowl of water set out for the pooches.

Highly recommend Lush. Check it out online at LushSobe.com.

Featured on ILovePhotoblogs.com

Pleased to announce that ipanemic.com is featured today on ILovePhotoBlogs.com, an amazing site which features the work of phenomenal photographers across the world. I’m incredibly honored and flattered to be featured in this awesome collection of photographers.

I highly recommend you visit ILovePhotoBlogs.com and explore the vast collection there. Apart from the endless amount of photographers and their art, there is a really nice archive of well-written and informative articles.

I was telling Rick who runs ILovePhotoBlogs.com about seeing the link to the article Top 10 Photos You Can Already Stop Shooting and before I even opened it to read it, I thought, “God, everything I shoot is going to be on this list!” Sure enough, it was, starting with sunrises, which I use as the background for ipanemic.com! Funny.

Anyway, check it out. Highly recommended.

(Side note, photos from September 6th are up in the Street +/ Life gallery.)

For the betterment of humanity

I am restructuring my business for the betterment of humanity. Effective immediately:

I.

Fifty (50) percent of all revenue generated from the sale of prints, posters, and/or artwork from the Girls of Ipanemic collection will be given directly to two causes, split equally: 1) Twentyfive (25) percent will go to combat teen depression and to help troubled teens and their families and 2) twentyfive (25) percent will go to to combat homelessness in South Beach and then beyond.

Additionally, twentyfive (25) percent will go directly back to the models unless they have specified otherwise. A number of models have elected to donate all or a portion of their proceeds directly to one of these two causes or, in one instance, to a third cause to help out children with cleft palates. (Over the coming few days, I will be providing a definitive list of where additional monies generated from the Girls of Ipanemic will be going.)

II.

Sixty (60) percent of all revenue generated from the sale of prints, posters, and/or artwork from the Street +/ Life collection will be given directly to the same two causes, split equally: 1) Thirty (30) percent will go to combat teen depression and to help troubled teens and their families and 2) thirty (30) percent will go to combat homelessness in South Beach and then beyond.

Please note that the work available for purchase in the Street +/ Life collection will only be work where individuals are not personally identifiable unless an individual has signed a release stating otherwise.

If you find yourself in a photo, please contact me. I would like to extend to you the following offer: an enlarged copy of the original image free of charge, and/or the option to have it printed by the lab I use AND shipped to you at cost. For more information regarding the quality and available formats of the prints, please read Information Regarding the Sale of Artwork.

Additionally, if you would like to make your image for sale with some or all proceeds going to either of the two causes noted (or some other charitable organization), please let me know that as well.

I have identified two organizations which I am very comfortable in getting behind with my support. One is Boys Town, a national organization that daily helps make a difference in the lives of youth and families across the nation. The second organization is Miami Rescue Mission. Miami Rescue Mission reaches beyond Miami and directly affects the lives of individuals on Miami Beach, working to bring an end to homelessness.

The reason that ipanemic.com has undergone the recent redesign (with continual tweaking taking place) is a direct result of my change in business structure. And it is my intention to move more into brick and mortar sales with ipanemic.com serving as the “corporate” website. I have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks, pulling together different components, people and businesses, to move in this new direction and still have a long way to go.

Why?

On a personal note, the road that I have traveled through this life has been long and winding. Like everyone’s path, the road has sometimes been less than smooth. And sometimes, as with the passing of my son, the road has seemed impassable. A simple look into ipanemic.com is enough to gain a basic understanding of my motivations and what brings me here. But for every bump in the road, there is a beautiful vista that sits just ahead. This is life. I want to make sure people get to see the vistas. I am thankful not only to have been able to see the beauty in life but for my two sons who I have loved dearly (and to everyone in my life) for helping me to see it.

My goals are very simple: to help humanity. Good begets good and I see it on a daily basis. With nearly eight million over 10 million views of my work, a following of over five-thousand people, and the incredibly supportive network of friends and family that I have, everything is in place to make an impact on humanity for the better.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your support. If you’d like more information on how to get involved or what you can do to make a difference, please contact me.

If you want to do the simple thing, spread the word using the share button below or simply like me on Facebook and spread the word there.

Eve of Self-Destruction

Tomorrow marks 9/11. It marks a passage of time. I have a strong love for my homeland of Arabia which I left some 20+ years ago now. The homeland that exposed me to the third world. To poverty. The homeland that exposed me to the richness and excess in life.

While I love that place I call home in my heart, I have a stronger love for humanity. I’m a humanitarian, I’ve come to realize. I love humanity. It seems absurd to type almost. I mean, who doesn’t love humanity? We’re all here together. And this is life. This is the development of our species, going on every day around us. Through science, through art, through religion and philosophy, through our nations, our businesses, and through our individual and personal relationships… we’re shaping the future of humanity.

Tomorrow is a sad day for many. Loved ones lost in yet one more senseless clash. I hope you can find peace in your heart tomorrow. And every day.
